Robert Wands was born in Denver, Colorado in June 1939. He was influenced at an early age by his father, Alfred Wands, well known Colorado landscape painter. By the time he was in his teens, he could work in almost all media, including oils, pastels and watercolor.

It was during his Senior year that Robert spent after school hours in his father's studio painting and preparing a portfolio of work for the University of Denver where he won a scholarship, specializing in an abstract style of landscape painting.

Robert received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1961 from the University of Denver, then attended the Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Art Institute in Cleveland, OH, following his father's footsteps. Robert returned to the University of Denver, where he completed his Master of Arts Degree in 1963. In 1962, Robert taught one year for the University of Denver, then began teaching in the Art Department of Colorado State University/Pueblo in September 1963, where he retired as Professor Emeritus of Art in 1996.
Robert and his father, Alfred, shared a summer studio and gallery on High Drive in Estes Park, Colorado for many years. Robert still exhibits his paintings in the studio each summer. His good design and craftsmanship have won him many awards and honors over the years.
